Creating a Custom Kitchen Design
When you are considering remodeling your kitchen, there are several factors you need to consider when creating a custom kitchen design. Not only do you want your new kitchen to look good but it also needs to function properly and accommodate your needs. Many homeowners are choosing to do their own kitchen design first and then either taking this design to a custom cabinet shop or a home improvement store to fine tune it and order the cabinets. This is a great way to ensure that you get the best design for your kitchen.
A good place to start when you are creating a custom kitchen design is with the type of cabinetry that you want to use. For example are you going to use wood cabinets? If you decide on to use wood, which species of wood do you like? You can choose from a variety of common woods such as maple, oak, or cherry or perhaps a more exotic wood like mahogany or teak. Any choice will look great in a kitchen it is just a matter of preference with the main difference in the wood species being the grain of the wood.
Once you have determined the type of cabinetry you want then you need to do the actual kitchen design. This is going to take a bit of time and patience to do. Before you actually begin drawing your design consider how you want the flow of the kitchen to work. For example, do you want the refrigerator near the stove for easy preparation or which side of the sink cabinet do you want your dishwasher to be? Once you have determined where your appliances will need to be located then you can fill in the cabinetry that you need.
When you are determining the cabinetry storage capacity should be one of the first things that you need to determine. For example, do you have lots of pots and pans? Then you should consider having a drawer base that is especially designed for that purpose. These drawer bases give you three drawers with the bottom two drawers being very deep for lots of storage. Another consideration to accommodate storage is having your upper cabinets 42" high instead of the standard 30" height. What you get with the extra height cabinets is an additional shelve area which is a great place to store items that are only used seasonally.
When you have your kitchen design completed then you can decide if you want to dress up your kitchen with a few finishing items. These can include running a crown molding around the top of the cabinets or a light rail around the bottom, which is a nice way to give the kitchen a finished look. Then there is the question on whether you want to add a few convenience gadgets which can include trash pull outs, rollout shelves or spice racks.
Creating a custom kitchen design for your home can be very rewarding especially when the project is completed and you can stand back and take a look at what you created. Remember when you are creating your kitchen design to take into account the flow of the kitchen and the storage you need as these are the two most important aspects to creating a custom kitchen design.
