How to choose good quality kitchen cabinets

It is extremely important when looking for new kitchen cabinets that you buy quality, because essentially it is the quality of your kitchen cabinets that determines how long your kitchen will last, how long your kitchen will look good, whether you’ll get value for your money over the lifespan of the kitchen and if you will enjoy cooking in your kitchen or will it only lead to you feeling frustrated.

The importance of selecting good, quality kitchen cabinets can not be emphasised enough. But how do you distinguish a quality kitchen cabinet from a cheap one? Below are some easy guidelines when going a kitchen cabinet supplier.

1. The kitchen cabinet doors

The first thing to do is open the kitchen cabinet door and determine if the inside colour is the same as the rest of the kitchen. A good quality kitchen cabinets’ inside colour will match the kitchen’s colour, however a cheap kitchen cabinet will most probably be white on the inside.

2. Kitchen cabinet shelves

Check the shelves of the cabinet. Are they as thick as the side panels? Cheaper cabinets have shelves that are inadequate for long-term use and will eventually give in after continued use. A quality kitchen cabinet’s shelves should at least be 19 mm thick and be supported by a metal shelve.

How is the back panel fixed to the sides? If it is well fitted it will make the cabinet more rigid and suitable for long-term use opposed to a cheap cabinet that will start to twist after some time and the doors will longer fit.

3. The drawers

Open the drawer and see if it moves smoothly. Quality runners support the drawer from the bottom and not from the sides. Tap the base of the drawer; does it feel solid and do you think it will be able to carry a lot of weight? Titanium drawer boxes can carry up to 30 kg and you can pull it out right to the back.

A quality drawer will be solid and secure as opposed to self-assembled drawers that have weak bases and will start to bend and loosen over time.

4. Flat pack or rigid cabinets

Look underneath the wall unit. A flat pack cabinet (the cheaper cabinet) covers its tracks through plastic caps that cover its metal fittings. A rigid cabinet is factory assembled and squared under pressure.
